Bopanna to meet Federer

HALLE: Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna set up a dream battle against World No.1 Roger Federer as he qualified for the Gerry Weber Open ATP Tour grass court event at Halle, Germany.

Currently the top ranked Indian on the ATP Tour, the 267th ranked Bopanna beat three higher ranked players in the qualifying event.

Bopanna beat 140th ranked second seed Kristian Pless of Denmark, a former junior World No.1, who was ranked as high as 65 in the ATP list in 2002, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in the third and final qualifying round. The 26-year-old Bopanna had earlier beaten the 129th ranked fifth seed Evgeny Korolev of Russia 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and the 171st ranked Simone Bolelli of Italy 7-6(6), 7-5 in the first two rounds in that order.

Another Indian Davis Cupper, Prakash Amritraj also figured in the qualifying event of singles, but lost to George Bastl of Switzerland 4-6, 4-6 in the second round after having beaten wildcard Daniel Brands of Germany 6-3, 6-2 in the first.
