Vijay wins, Atwal falters

New York: Ghost of the greens came to haunt Arjun Atwal who returned a nightmarish final round card of nine-over 80 to finish a distant tied 77th in the Barclays Classic here.

After rounds of 72, 71, 73 and 80, the Orlando-based Indian ended with a four-day aggregate of 12-over 296 and the final round debacle put paid to his hopes of a decent finish here.

This has been a terrible season for Atwal so far and he missed four cuts in a row before breaking the jinx here.

On the contrary, it was a hugely satisfying moment for Fijian Vijay Singh, who ended a 10-month-long title drought by winning the tournament with a two-stroke lead over Australian Adam Scott.

Singh carded three-under 68 to total 10-under 274 and pocket his third title at the Westchester Country Club. — UNI
