Talks on estate wages fail

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Government's bid to bring to an end the 19-day-old strike by plantation workers has failed. At the talks held here on Monday, the union leaders and the management representatives told Labour Minister P. K. Gurudasan that they would discuss the settlement formula put forward by the Government and convey their stand on it. Therefore, they decided to continue the talks after that. The Government had revised the minimum wages of the plantation workers in February 2006. Under the notification, the managements were asked to pay the arrears from 2002. The managements had questioned this provision in court. The strike is to press for the payment of the arrears in full. — Special Correspondent

Super-fast to have stop at Palakkad

PALAKKAD: The new Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram Super-fast Express will have stop at Palakkad Railway Junction from Monday.

According to the new schedule, the train from Chennai (No.2695) reaches Palakkad at 12.15 midnight and the train (No.2696) from Thiruvananthapuram reaches the station at 12.50 midnight. The train (2695) starts from Chennai at 4.15 p.m.In the other direction, the train (2696) from Thiruvanathapuram starts at 5.15 p.m. The train runs with 18 bogies, three A\C coaches, 10 sleeper coaches and five ordinary coaches, According to Railways. — Staff Reporter

Conditional stay on MACTA elections

Kochi: An Ernakulam Munsiff Court on Monday issued an injunction restraining Sibi Malayil and Kamal, chairman and secretary respectively of the Malayalam Cine Technicians Association (MACTA) and K.M. Roy, Returning Officer for the elections to the Association, from holding the elections without providing an opportunity to the active members to participate in the polls. The elections are scheduled for June 25. The order was passed on a suit filed by Salim Cherthala and Venu B. Nair. They also challenged the notice served on them by the MACTA to disqualifying them as members. According to them, they were active members. The action of the MACTA was illegal, they contended. — Staff Reporter

Department's clarification

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Finance Department has refuted reports to the effect that it has taken back or has frozen benefits allowed through the pension revision order of April 18, 2006 through the order issued on June 8. In a pressnote issued here on Monday, it clarified that the provision under which the pension should be refixed to enable those who had retired prior to July 1, 2004 to get at least 50 per cent of the minimum of the pay scale revised with effect from April 1, 2005 as full pension was very much in existence. The Government was also pledge-bound to implement it. The department refuted the reports that it had been postponed through the June 8 order. No change had been made in the provision regarding it in the April 18 order. — Special Correspondent

MBA admission

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The group discussion and interview for admission to the full time MBA programme at the Department of Business Administration, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, will be held on June 21 and 22. Passes away

THRISSUR: Freedom fighter and one of the founding leaders of the Communist Party in the district M.A. Kakku died at his residence here on Monday. He was 97. Mr. Kakku, who was one of the founding secretaries of the Kochi Raja Prajamandalam as well as the Labour Brotherhood, had made significant contributions to the working class movement in the area. — Staff Reporter

Courses in counselling from June 30

KANNUR: The Hridayaram Counselling Centre here has been approved by Kannur University as its community college to offer two courses beginning June 30. The centre, which had been rechristened Hridayaram Community College of Counselling, will start the postgraduate diploma course in counselling and the certificate course in basic counselling skills. The college said in a press release here that the minimum qualification for admission to the one-year postgraduate diploma course is graduation, while applicants for the certificate course should have passed Plus Two/pre-degree/TTC. The last date for receiving applications is June 20, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The Branch Recruiting Office, West Hill Barracks, will conduct an Army recruitment rally on the football ground of Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College here from June 13 to 18, a press release from Rajiv Khanna, Director, Army Recruiting, says. — Staff Reporter

ITI employees go on fast

PALAKKAD: N.N. Krishnadas, MP, has demanded that the Union Government restore the 30 per cent quota of telecom works of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) for Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) Limited. Inaugurating a 10-hour fast of officers and employees of ITI before the Kanjikode unit at 8 a.m. on Monday, he said the quota was withdrawn through a recent order. He alleged that this was done to protect the interests of the U.S Government which had opposed the quota system for BSNL and MTNL. The U.S. wanted BSNL and MTNL's orders for its firms. — Staff Reporter

Exams postponed

KOTTAYAM: Mahatma Gandhi University has postponed all examinations scheduled for June 13, a press note here said. Revised schedule will be informed later. — Staff Reporter

Encroachments identified

KOLLAM: A survey being conducted on Ashtamudi Lake in the past three days detected 54 encroachments in the Karunagapally Taluk portion of the lake.

This is in addition to the 61 encroachments on the Kollam Taluk side that was detected on Saturday and Sunday. — Staff Reporter
