CPI(M) rules out tie-up with TDP

Staff Reporter

Accuses Congress of adopting dilatory tactics on the seat-sharing

  • CPI(M) to go it alone for the panchayat elections
  • Party to contest 200 ZPTCs and 2,000 MPTCs

KRISHNAPATNAM: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has ruled out any electoral tie-up with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the panchayat elections.

It has, however, said that it will have electoral understanding at local level with any party except the BJP. Dispelling all doubts about its tie-ups with the TDP, CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu made it clear that the party had never said that it would have a tie-up with the TDP. "The CPI (M) will go it alone in the coming panchayat elections and contest 200 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies and 2,000 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency segments," he said.

    Takes a dig at Congress

Taking a dig at the Congress, he alleged that the ruling party had adopted dilatory tactics on the seat-sharing with the CPI(M). He wondered as to how the Congress could claim that the CPI(M) had no base both in Khammam and Nalgonda to seek these two ZPs.

"It should remember that the Congress had been in power both Khammam and Nalgonda Zilla Parishads with the support of the Left. Therefore, our demand to the Congress to leave these two ZPs for the CPI (M) is bereft of any logic," he said.

    `Ultimate' aim

Rajahmundry: CPI(M) State committee member B. Venkat declared that their party's ultimate aim was to capture power at the Centre and more States in future.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the leader said the party had left the option of allying with the TDP to its district committees.

He said that the local unit had taken a decision to contest in eight ZPTCs, including six seats in the agency and two in plain areas.

Mr. Venkat lashed out at the Congress for its power game and opportunism.
