State rated No. 1 in power sector

HYDERABAD: For the third consecutive year, the State power sector has stood first, with CRISIL assigning the State top rank for overall performance in 2005-06 in a rating exercise commissioned by Union Ministry of Power. YSR forbids gifts

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asked Ministers, MLAs and other public representatives to avoid presentation of swords, crowns, turbans and other mementoes during Government and public functions. Barring khadi kanduva, no gift article should be presented, he said asking them to discourage people from such ostentatious practices. - Special Correspondent

ONGC pays for land

HYDERABAD: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has paid Rs. 5.26 crores to the State Government towards the cost of 2.6 acres allotted to it at the IT Park in Gachibowli on the city outskirts. ONGC is planning to set up an integrated office on the allotted land following its decision to take up several new projects and retail marketing activities in the State. - Special Correspondent

Meet on Telangana

HYDERABAD: A meeting of elected representatives from Telangana, including past and present MPs and MLAs, has been convened at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram here on June 15 to discuss developments towards formation of Telangana State. Former Governor B. Satyanarayana Reddy and former Deputy Chief Minister C. Jagannatha Rao would address the meeting, its organisers told a news conference on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

Training on patents

Hyderabad: S. Raghuvardhan Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) has underscored the importance of increasing awareness among researchers and scientists on the need to apply for patents. Rape case accused held

Kakinada: The Mummidivaram police have arrested and remanded to judicial custody one Geddam Naganna (18) who allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl last Wednesday. The victim is now in a state of shock and convalescing at the Government General Hospital here. - Correspondent

5-year jail term for two

KADAPA: Kadapa Fast Track Judge on Monday sentenced two murder accused, Kaveti Srinivasulu and Palem Nagaraju, to imprisonment for five years on charges of murdering Alamuri Ramudu, a mason of Pulivendula at Kondapuram on January 20, 2004. - Staff Reporter

Child eletrocuted

NIZAMABAD: One child died and another was seriously injured when they touched high tension power wires at Yellammagutta under the III town police station limits in the town on Monday. Sukhran and Shoab, studying IX and VII Class respectively mounted a wall while returning home after school. They then stood one on top of the other and came in contact with the wire. Sukhran died while undergoing treatment. - Staff Reporter

Child Labour Eradication Day

KURNOOL: Children and officials took out a colourful rally at Johrapuram here on Monday in connection with the Child Labour Eradication Day. Project Director of Child Labour Elimination project Sudhakar Rao and others took part in the rally. Mr. Rao inspected the NCLP centre and inquired with the inmates the quality of food being served and other comforts. Plea to shift polling booth

MADANAPALLE: The Andhra Pradesh Pensioners Association vice-president Peddi Raju on Sunday requested the authorities to shift the polling booth to Ravindranagar in Madanapalle instead of the one, which was 5 km, away. There was no bus facility too and this would cause inconvenience to voters, he said. Addressing a meeting of the association he also requested the Government to release the G.O. regarding enhanced DA to pensioners. - Correspondent

CPI(M) obstructs road-widening

KADAPA: Activists of the CPI(M) obstructed officials on Monday from widening the road from Dongalacheruvu here to Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences via Prakashnagar.

The protesters led by CPI(M) town secretary K. Anjaneyulu submitted a memorandum to District Collector M.T. Krishna Babu stating that the road-widening would render several poor families homeless. The Collector assured to inspect the area within a week and take appropriate decision. - Staff Reporter

Free dental camp held

KADAPA: TDP Minority Cell president V.S. Ameer Babu on Monday called upon doctors to hold dental camps in slum areas in Kadapa town.

Dentist B. Obulapathi explained about dental hygiene at a free dental camp at Bethestha prayer hall at Masapet here. TDP district vice-president Balakrishna Yadav, town secretary Jayakumar, Minority Cell town vice-president C.S. Naser Ali gave away medicines, tooth pastes and brushes to the poor. - Staff Reporter

Woman dies in road accident

ANANTAPUR: A woman was killed and 11 others were injured in two separate accidents in Guntakal and Gorantla in the district on Monday.

Narasamma (55) was killed on the spot, after a lorry hit her while she was crossing the road in Old Guntakal.

In another accident in Gorantla, 11 persons travelling in an autorickshaw were injured, when a lorry hit the vehicle. The injured were treated at a PHC there and later shifted to the DCH Government Hospital at Hindupur. - Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry: Multimedia show on goddess Sri Astalakshmi Vaibhavam by Karri Rama Reddy was the highlight of the second day function of idol installation process of Sri Goda Sahitha Sri Ranganatha Swami in Sri Asta Lakshmi temple on Monday. Earlier on Sunday, the process was launched with temple rituals being performed by chief priest Sriman Panchangam Venkata Rangacharyulu. Training classes

Kakinada: Zilla Parishad CEO Nagesh Babu who is also the additional district election authority inaugurated the training classes for the returning officers for panchayat polls here on Monday.
