TIRUCHI: Accelerated initiative on the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) front is expected to enhance identification of dropouts as well as enrolment.

Though the Central and state governments got their acts together years ago under the aegis of SSA for total eradication of illiteracy, the problem of dropouts did remain. But, a month-long survey for the identification of dropouts and enrolment that got launched on Monday holds promise.

The entire revenue district has been divided into three zones - Tiruchi, Lalgudi and Musiri. About 105 Block Resource Teacher Educators (BRTEs) will complete the survey and ensure the enrolment. Each BRTE has been allocated a specific area for follow-up of the enrolment. "The new methodology adopted this year is that the BRTEs will ensure not only immediate admission of the dropouts in to any one of the SSA programme of education but also keep a follow-up for the whole academic year," says N. Krishnamoorthy, Teacher Training Officer, Tiruchi.

The survey will be conducted with the assistance of the teachers of the service areas allotted to the BRTE, voluntary and service organisations and NGOs to achieve cent per cent literacy. Despite the sincere efforts of the government and the other agencies, the target is yet to be achieved, mainly due to recurring problem arising out of dropouts. A total of 94 dropouts who were identified at three zones on Monday, have been immediately admitted to the schools in the vicinity. "A maximum of 41 drop-outs have been identified in Manikandam block in Tiruchi zone, 30 in Uppiliyapuram in Musiri zone and 23 in Pullampadi in Lalgudi zone," he said.

A special four-day survey will commence in the Corporation limits in Tiruchi from June 26.

The SSA authorities will submit a report to the District Collector, Ashish Vachhani, at the end of the survey, he said.

The enrolment drive appears to have become a mass movement. Many schools have been organising `enrolment drive campaigns' in their localities by involving all sections of the society. The main objective of the campaign is to motivate the parents to admit the left out students in the age group of 6 to 14 years in the schools.

Under the auspices of the Corporation Elementary School, Sengulam Colony, an enrolment drive procession was organised in Tiruchi recently, when the students and teachers carrying placards and stressing the importance of achieving literacy for the overall development of the country marched through all the streets in and around Mannarpuram. The rally was flagged off by the Corporation Councillor and the president of the School Committee, Balamurugan. Block Resource Teacher, Alagu Subramaniyan, the headmistress, S. Vaijayanthi also participated.
