SEZ Board nod for 17 companies

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Board of Approvals for Special Economic Zones is believed to have given clearance in principle for 17 companies to set up such zones including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Essar. Official sources say the Board's recommendations will now be sent for a final decision to the Commerce and Industry Minister, Kamal Nath.

In addition, the board cleared five companies to set up specialised SEZs for textiles, IT, leather and food processing. These include an apparel park proposed by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation and an animation and gaming SEZ proposed by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation. The Council of Footwear Manufacturers' proposal for a leather park was also approved by the SEZ Board.

Semindia and Suzlon are said to have been given in-principle approval for setting up a free trade warehousing zone and a hi-tech engineering products zone, respectively. The Essar proposal for a chemicals SEZ and the Infosys one for an IT park in Bangalore have been given the go ahead by the board. The information technology SEZs proposed by TCS and CMC have also been cleared. Besides, the board has given the green signal for two SEZs in the pharma sector sought to be set up by Cadila and Hetro Drugs.
