CHENNAI:
A fire at `Gandhi Illam' on Monday afternoon damaged the already dilapidated structure, built more than 100 years ago.
People were alerted to the fire after seeing smoke coming out of the first floor of the building situated next to the stately Rajaji Hall inside the Omanthoorar Government Estate around 3 p.m.
Three fire tenders and five Metrowater lorries put out the fire within an hour, but not before the blaze damaged the teak window frames and doors, said fire and rescue service personnel.
The building, which used to be a small museum in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, later became the Jawahar Bal Bhavan.
The Bal Bhavan was shifted after a portion of the building collapsed in the November 2005 rains.
According to Public Works department authorities, the building is waiting to be demolished.
"We do not know how the fire started," said a senior PWD official.
