"Suspend work on Maheshwar dam"

NEW DELHI: Responding to representations by the Narmada Bachao Andolan, the Centre has directed the Madhya Pradesh Government to ask the private company constructing the 400 MW Maheshwar hydroelectric project in the Narmada valley to suspend work on the dam until a comprehensive plan for rehabilitation and resettlement of the displaced persons was submitted.

More than 21,000 families in 61 villages are said to be affected.
