Bid to check child mortality rate in State

KADAPA: The Government will launch Young Infant Insurance Scheme within three months with a view to checking child mortality rate in the State, Commissioner of Family Welfare C.B.S. Venkataramana said on Monday.

Addressing a workshop on Reproductive and Child Health Project II for medical and para-medical officers at the DMHO office here, he said mortality rate among children was 59 per 1,000 and nearly 75 per cent of deaths occurred within a month of birth. The insurance scheme would be implemented with the cooperation of Government and private hospitals to check infant mortality, he said.

Vouchers enough to meet consultation fee of private doctors and cost of medicines would be given to poor rural parents under the scheme, Dr. Venkataramana explained.

The vouchers would facilitate a day's admission in hospital and treatment, he said. Infants could undergo six medical check-ups over a three-month period, he stated. SC/ST families would be accorded priority as child mortality rate among them was high, he explained.

Dr. Venkataramana urged officials to compile data on private hospitals and doctors and forward to him.

Women health volunteers were appointed in all villages to check woman and child mortality.
