City airport to get DGCA licence for safety

Third in the country to be evaluated for granting the licence

Thiruvananthapuram: The State's premier international airport in the capital is all set to get the licence from the Director General of Civil Aviation for adherence to safety and security standards.

A team of officials from the DGCA directorate in New Delhi had carried out inspection of the safety standards of Thiruvananthapuram international airport in April as part of issuing the licence. Under the new international aviation standards, individual airports have to avail of licences on the basis of their maintaining safety and security standards.

"The inspection carried out by DGCA officials focussed mainly on ground flight safety such as safety of runway, apron and that of approach lights, among other things. The officials have already submitted the report. We are expecting the licence any time from DGCA," the Airport Director, K. Natarajan told The Hindu .

After New Delhi and Mumbai airports, Thiruvananthapuram international airport was the third to be taken up in the entire country by the DGCA for granting the mandatory licence. "Effective from November 2005, the licence from the DGCA is mandatory for the airports in the country to carry out flight operations", he said.

Although the DGCA will issue licence to the airports on the basis of the inspection carried out by the officials, he said the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) would carry out random checks of the airports before certifying the licence.

In September last, Thiruvananthapuram international airport had become the first airport in the State and the fourth international airport of the country to get ISO certification.

With the ISO status, the passengers are being assured quality service from the various agencies connected with the operation of the airport. The certificate granting the ISO 9001: 2000 status was awarded with effect from September 15.
