Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan chose to be frank and forthright when it came to matters of civic responsibility of a local body towards the general public that had voted it to power. Mr. Achuthanandan, during a reception accorded to him by the Kozhikode Corporation Council on Monday, had a straightforward advice to the local body. The Chief Minister categorically stated that sanitation and solid waste management was the primary and statutory responsibility of the Corporation, and it alone. This was a responsibility that no local body can shirk and delegate to someone else, and place the blame on another too. The State Government was willing to provide the needed funds, no doubt, but the process of waste management and sanitation should be initiated by the Corporation. The Chief Minister's advice has come at a time when Kozhikode city is reeling under the threat of solid waste piling up in every nook and cranny of the city.
