Retrospective of Kim Ki Duk's films starts today

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki Duk has been noted for a film genre that is distinct in style and portrayal.

An audience could accept or reject him, but here is a director who could not be ignored, critics aver. Kim's films have both been controversial and different, inviting world attention for over a decade.

The Aswini Film Society is conducting a retrospective of Kim Ki Duk's films at the Alakapuri Auditorium here from June 14 to 20. Titled the `Monsoon Film Festival,' as many as five films of the South Korean director will be screened on the occasion.

Despite the failure of some of his films at the box office, Kim is noted to have held on to his profession with a sense of equanimity. The filmmaker has been noted for his simplicity in portrayal, and keeping the dialogue to the minimum.

The protagonists are common people who strive to escape from the violent situations in which they are placed, by the realities of life. From the helpless situation, Kim's characters take recourse to breaking of the law to escape from their predicament.

He has successfully portrayed how women placed in dire situations have been exploited to the hilt, and more often than not driven to a state of prostitution.

The thin line between the good and the bad is amply portrayed in Kim's movies.

Critics evaluate this tendency to the filmmaker's search for beauty and truth through the bizarre and the sinful. Kim has scripted and directed as many as 12 films in the last one decade.

The films being screened in Kozhikode are `Bad Guy' (June 14); `The Coast Guard' (June 15); `3 - Iron' (June 16); `The Isle' (June 19); and `Samaritan Girl' (June 20).
