MYSORE: Hoteliers in Mysore distributed notebooks, school bags, lunch boxes, pencils and stationary to more than a 1,000 students on Sunday. The beneficiaries of the Mysore Hotel Owners' Association's programme included poor students enrolled in lower kindergarten (LKG), primary, middle and high schools, besides college and degree courses. The association had invited applications from students belonging to economically poor sections of society to receive free stationery. "There was an overwhelming response. We gave away stationery to all students who responded to the appeal made through newspapers," said Kundar, an executive committee member of the association. The Jaganmohan Palace Auditorium in Mysore was packed when Housing Minister D.T. Jayakumar and Commissioner of Mysore City Corporation Chandrashekar gave away stationery. The stationery given to the students depended on the latter's requirement. For instance, students studying in LKG were given lunch boxes, water bottles, drawing books, colour pencils and writing pencils. In the case of students studying in primary schools, a school bag, pencil box, lunch box, water bottle and notebooks were given. College students were given long books, he said. The association gave away 10 notebooks of 200 pages, 10 notebooks of 100 pages and five copybooks to each student. In a few deserving cases, the association gave away uniforms also. Children of hotel employees were also among the beneficiaries. "It is part of our social obligation to society. We have been giving away stationery to poor students since a couple of years," he said. The association incurred an expenditure of Rs. 3 lakh for the programme. After giving away stationery, the association hosted a dinner for the beneficiaries.
