Railway gates play a major role in adding to the already worsening traffic problems of the city. The railway gates at many level crosses in the city are known to wreak havoc upon the traffic by getting stuck in the midst of the busiest of hours. The gates at Edappally, Ponnurunni and Pulleppadi often remain closed for long durations, as more than one train has to pass along that route. Recently, the residents of Vaduthala and Pachalam also got a taste of the railway gate going on `strike.' The gate in front of Don Bosco, Vaduthala refused to open during the peak hour, forcing the motorists to take diversions, which added to the problems.
