A commemorative tablet inscribed with the name of the former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was hastily removed from the newly constructed headquarters of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) at Vikas Bhavan. The grapevine in VACB circles has it that the costly black marble plaque was removed to humour the new Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who is scheduled to visit the headquarters office on Wednesday afternoon. The ornamental tablet was fixed in March this year to commemorate the inauguration of the building by the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The opening ceremony scheduled for March 1 never materialised. The Chief Minister refused to attend the function at the last moment allegedly to register his protest against the manner in which VACB director Upendra Verma handled the SNC Lavlin corruption case. The commemorative tablet etched with the names of Oommen Chandy, the then Cooperation Minister M.V. Raghavan and Mayor C. Jayan Babu remained fixed on the wall as a reminder of the tumultuous times witnessed by the anti-corruption bureau.
