STs seeks recognition

Special Correspondent

Demand pending for over 40 years

PONDICHERRY: The president of the Pondicherry Scheduled Tribes People's Federation, K. Ramkumar, has urged the Prime Minister to intervene and expedite the publication of notification of the President sanctioning recognition of the Scheduled Tribes residing in Pondicherry.

The STs had not been recognised for last more than 40 years and the federation had been making persistent moves with the State and Central governments to procure the recognition.

A committee constituted by the Administration had also identified the castes or communities coming under the category of STs residing in Pondicherry. Resolutions were also adopted in the Assembly and forwarded to the Centre making a strong case for the issue of the notification by the President.

Mr. Ramkumar said that for want of the presidential notification the STs were deprived of the benefits of reservation in education and employment.
