10 Tripura militants killed
Haroon Habib
DHAKA:
At least 10 Indian militants, reportedly belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), were killed in a gun battle with a joint force of the Army and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a remote border area in Rangamati on Monday.
RAB Additional Director General Col. Mahbubur Rahman said arms and ammunition were seized from the site but did not confirm any casualty.
The Independent quoting Army sources said the operation was mounted following a tip-off that 60 to 70 NLFT members were camping in the area for the last few days. A team of Army and RAB-7 personnel led by Lieutenant Colonel Anisur Reza and Major Mahiuddin rushed to the spot at around 7 a.m. NLFT members opened fire and the team retaliated, leading to an hour-long gun battle. As casualties mounted, the NLFT men fled, leaving behind the 10 dead.
