CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS

Manohar Joshi is with the Shiv Sena, says a reader pointing out that the caption of the standalone picture "Protest against price rise" (June 13, 2006, page 1) mentions him incorrectly to be with the BJP.

A reader has pointed out that there are errors in "Rural enterprises growing faster" (June 13, 2006), a report on the "Economic Census 2005". The sentences were: "Of 421 lakh enterprises, 258.1 lakh (61.3 per cent) are in the rural areas while the remaining 163.1 lakh (38.7 per cent) are in towns and cities. Tamil Nadu has the largest — 44.4 lakh (10.56 per cent of the total enterprises), followed by Maharashtra, with 43.7 lakh (10.93 per cent) enterprises in terms of numbers. "10.93 per cent" should have been "10.39 per cent". And "In the enterprises sector, West Bengal follows, with the number of units being 428.5 lakh (10.17 per cent), followed by Andhra Pradesh 402.3 lakh (9.55 per cent); and Uttar Pradesh has 401.5 lakh (9.53 per cent)", the correct figures are "42.8 lakh", "40.2 lakh" and "40.15 lakh" respectively.

Is it piping ceremony or pip ceremony, ask a few readers, referring to the report "Passing out with panache" ("Newscape", June 11, 2006). The text said "piping ceremony". The Indian Military Academy website says that the Passing Out Parade is a ceremony that closes with the pipping of stars (wearing badges of rank of an officer), on the shoulders of the young graduates of the Academy. This is followed by the oath taking ceremony (Allegiance to the Constitution) and the Academy Song on the steps of the Khetarpal Auditorium. In the pipping ceremony, the uniforms have the stars on the shoulder flaps, which remain covered. As the bugler blows the time, the parents/guardian stand by the side of the gentleman cadet. The cover is then opened or the cadet is pipped.

A reader points out that the heading of the PTI report "Canada honours 11 Indo-Canadians" (June 12, 2006) is incorrect. The awards were a part of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce Annual awards function. So the heading should have been "Association honours 11 Indo-Canadians".

In the Reuters report on the World Cup, "Riquelme orchestrates Argentine master class" ("Sport", June 12, 2006), a reader says that the text incorrectly refers to Roberto Ayala as a veteran of the 1978 edition. It should have been the 1998 edition, the reader says. The Sports Desk clarifies that the reader is right and that the error was in the earlier editions.

In The Guardian report "World Cup: the biggest and richest" ("Sport", June 10, 2006), a reader says that while Ronaldo needs three goals to beat Gerd Muller's record, the writer's split of Ronaldo's 1998 and 2002 goals is wrong. The Sports Desk clarifies that Ronaldo scored four in the 1998 World Cup and eight in the 2002 World Cup, and not six and six, as was published.

A factual error in the Agency report "Kuznetsova gets past Vaidisova" (Earlier editions, "Sport", June 9, 2006). A reader says that the sentence was: "Leander Paes and his Russian team mate Maria Kirilenko ran into the seventh seeded American duo of Bob Byran and the legendary Martina Navratilova in the mixed doubles quarterfinal." It should have been "Leander Paes ... ran into the sixth seeded American duo of ... ."
