DEHRA DUN: At least 35 persons were killed and 25 injured when a truck carrying a marriage party from Basot to Manila village in Almora district rolled off the road into a 100-metre-deep khud near Bhikyasain on Tuesday afternoon. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals and the death toll is likely to go up, official sources said. Expressing anguish at the fatal road mishaps in the hills, Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari has announced an ex gratia relief of Rs. 1lakh to the next of kin of those killed and Rs. 25000 to the injured. Overloading, rash driving or drunken driving have resulted in a large number of accidents in the region over the past three in which over 2000 persons, mostly pilgrims and tourists, have been killed. All attempts by the Government to check accidents have failed.
