VISAKHAPATNAM: The Deputy District Education Officer B. Sitarama Rao said that proposals have been sent to the Government for starting a `mobile teacher unit' to educate the children of fishermen, who are living along the coast between Visakhapatnam and Bheemunipatnam. Participating as chief guest at a meeting organised by the Bala Vikas Foundation in connection with the `International Day Against Child Labour' on Monday, he said that the plans were made after the success of a similar experiment in Kolleru lake region.

Mr. Sitarama Rao expressed the view that the mobile teacher unit could start functioning on an experimental basis from the present academic year itself. He said that economic inequalities were responsible for lack of education among some groups and added that the Government was extending free education to poor children. The Deputy Inspector of schools Jaffer Ali said that mass `aksharabyasam' (ritual to initiate children into education) programmes would be held at all schools on June 16 to mark the successful completion of the `Badi baata' programme of the Government. Presiding over the meeting, the foundation's organising secretary Narava Prakasa Rao underlined the importance of abolition of child labour. The supervisor of Municipal Corporation Schools F. Vijaya, Mandal resource person Tata Babu, the III town CI Gangadhara Rao and the foundation's vice-president Padala Venkateswara Rao were among those who participated. The participants took an oath to strive for abolition of child labour and enrolment of dropouts in schools.
