COMED-K merit list today

BANGALORE: The merit list of the Undergraduate Entrance Test (UGET) conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) for admission to its member institutions will be announced on Wednesday.

The consortium will assign engineering ranks to all those who scored at least 45 per cent marks in the 2nd pre-university or equivalent examination.

In all, 9,044 candidates have become eligible for MBBS and BDS seats, having scored above 50 per cent marks in the physics, chemistry and biology papers. — Staff Reporter

Police open fire to end clash

GULBARGA: Police fired three rounds in the air to break up two groups involved in a violent clash at Chillanakera village in Yadgir taluk of Gulbarga district on Tuesday.

According to reports received here, additional police force has been rushed to the village and the situation is under control. The reports said that the clash between Kabbaligas and Dalits was a sequel to a minor clash between members of the two communities on Monday evening during the Karunnime festival. — Special Correspondent

Government to honour 82 farmers

BANGALORE: The State Government will present Krishi Awards to 82 farmers on June 22 for excellence in agriculture.

Minister for Agriculture Bandeppa Kashempur said here on Tuesday that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa would present the awards for 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05, he added. — Special Correspondent

TMC president voted out of office

BIJAPUR: Basavanabagewadi Town Municipal Council president Basanna Kollur was removed from office by means of a no-confidence motion on Tuesday.

Thirteen of the 19 members of the council expressed a lack of confidence in his leadership. The general body adopted the motion in a special sitting chaired by vice-president Mumtaz Roodagi. Nobody voted against it as Mr. Kallur and five members supporting him did not attend the meeting.

Eeranna Pattanshetti, who led the rebellion, is tipped to become the next president.

Rollback in prices sought

Belgaum: The district units of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the National Federation of Indian Women staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Tuesday demanding rollback in fuel prices. CPI State Executive member A.R. Vijaykumar, district secretary Nagesh Sateri, city secretary Anil Ajgaonkar and NFIW State President Parimala Vijaykumar led the agitation. — Staff Correspondent

Rasta roko

SHIMOGA: Members of the Samajawadi Party held a demonstration here on Tuesday to protest against the increase in fuel prices. They took out a procession from the Ramanna Shetty Park and staged a "rasta roko" at the Ameer Ahmed Circle and the Gopi Circle. Later, they presented a memorandum to the district administration. Samajawadi Party district unit president M. Nagendra Rao led the protest. — Special Correspondent

Man arrested

Madikeri: The District Crime Investigation Bureau (DCIB) team has arrested a man who was selling ganja in Gonicoppa in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu, estimated at Rs. 50,000, according to information received here on Tuesday. The team arrested the man on Monday after posing as prospective buyers near a cinema in Gonicoppa. — Staff Correspondent

Help centre

HUBLI: The Income Tax Department in association with Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Hubli, is setting up an Income Tax Help Centre at KCCI building in J.C. Nagar, Hubli. The help centre will work from June 15 to August 14 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on all working days. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: The Hubli branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India had organised a seminar under the continuing professional education programme on "Tax deducted at source — a practical overview" here recently.

Killed in accident

DHARWAD: A woman was killed when she fell into a well while plucking flowers. The name of the victim has been given as Lalita (54), wife of Maruti R. Hugar, a resident of Mangalwarpet in Dharwad. The police said Lalita was leaning over the parapet of the well for plucking flowers when she slipped and fell into the well. Dharwad Town police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Hides seized

KARWAR: Karwar police seized hides of five deer and a leopard and five horns of the deer from Gouse (48), a resident of Pradhani near Dandeli, on Tuesday. Gouse has been arrested and a case has been booked against him under Wild Life Protection Act. — Correspondent

Passport cell

DAVANGERE: A passport cell has been set up in the office of the Superintendent of Police. Those who want to apply for passport can directly contact the cell and submit the application along with the prescribed forms. Superintendent of Police Sonia Sarang, in a statement, said that the cell was set up to avoid delay in receiving and processing applications before sending them to Bangalore Passport Office. Police would verify the addresses of applicants and later send the genuine applications to the passport office, Bangalore. Hitherto people had to submit their applications to the post office. — Staff Correspondent

Suspended

BIJAPUR: Chief executive officer of the Basavanabagewadi Town Municipal Council, S.B. Byali, has been placed under suspension on charges of dereliction of duty. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin issued an order to this effect here on Tuesday. It was alleged that the officer did not settle accounts with regard to several developmental works taken up in the previous year. He has also been charged of not carrying out road widening work between Basavanabagewadi and Telgi Railway Station even after lapse of deadline and for being absent in the district-level review meetings repeatedly. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Shivappa and Gyanangouda from Halbhavi village in Lingsugur taluk, Sugangouda, Marenna and Chennabasawa from Bailmerched village in Manvi taluk and Basawaraja and six others from Jawlgera village and Basawanthrao and eight others from Nagara Camp in Sindhanur taluk on charges of gambling and recovered a total of about Rs. 7,000 from them on Monday.

All have been remanded in judicial custody. Separate cases have been registered with the Lingsugur, the Manvi and the Balaganur police stations. — Staff Correspondent

Dies of burns

Raichur: Eranna (50) sustained burns in an accidental fire while he was asleep at his house in Narbanda village in Manvi taluk on Friday. He was admitted to the District Civil Hospital where he died on Sunday. The Sirwar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Boys washed away

BIJAPUR: Two boys were washed away in a rivulet at Somadevarahatti in Tikota police station limits near here on Monday. The victims were identified as Prabhu Parameshwar Kavi (9) and Amagonda Mallappa Kavi (10). They had reportedly entered the rivulet for swimming. — Staff Correspondent

Man dies of snakebite

BIJAPUR: Appasaheb Savankar, 30, of Tikota hobli died after he was bitten by a poisonous snake early on Tuesday. He died on his way to the civil hospital here. — Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA: Mahantesh of the Chandrasekhar Patil English Medium School in Gulbarga has won the first prize in the painting competition conducted by the District Science Centre to commemorate the World Environment Day on June 5. The results were announced here on Tuesday. While Mahantesh, studying in the class 8, won the first prize, Avinash of the same school, studying in class 9 got the third place. — Special Correspondent
