BJP too rushes to defend Amitabh

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party too has rushed — after the Samajwadi Party — to defend superstar Amitabh Bachchan against queries made by the Income Tax authorities through notices sent to him.

Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said that he could not figure out "why only one family was being targeted." First, it was the case of office of profit against Jaya Bachchan that led to her disqualification, and Mr. Bachchan had been issued notices by the tax authorities even when he was in hospital.

When Mr. Naidu was asked whether the Income-Tax Department could be expected to get the medical report before sending a person a notice for suspected tax evasion, his answer was "yes, it should."

At the same time, Mr. Naidu said that while "the law should take its own course" he did emphasise that "one family was being targeted."
