Steep fall in rupee

MUMBAI: The rupee on Tuesday declined steeply against the U.S. currency and closed at 46.03/04 a dollar due to fresh dollar demand after a sharp rise in dollar against other world currencies.

In active trading at the interbank foreign exchange market here, the Indian unit resumed on a weak note at 45.9550/9650 and plunged further to 46.0300/0400, steeply lower than Monday's close of 45.9125/9225.

On Monday, the rupee had strengthened following suspected dollar selling by state-owned banks on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India to check sharp fall in value.
