Karnataka team seeks repeal of Article 169

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Set to turn 100 next year, the Karnataka Legislative Council is using the occasion to press for a bicameral legislature in all States of the country. Armed with a resolution to this effect, which was passed by the Council in April, Karnataka's Upper House Chairman V.R. Sudarshan is here at the head of an all-party delegation to urge the Centre to repeal Article 169 of the Constitution, which makes the Legislative Council a "creation" of the Assembly.

The delegation met the President, the Vice-President, the Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister on Tuesday with a memorandum and a copy of the resolution passed by the Council on April 5, 2006.

The delegation is due to meet Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, L.K. Advani and Jaswant Singh, on Wednesday.
