Ministers asked to visit refugee camps

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday asked Housing Minister Suba. Thangavelan and Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Periyakaruppan to visit the Sri Lankan refugee camps in the State and submit immediately a report on their requirements such as food, dress, accommodation and medical facilities. In a statement, he said he had taken the step on the basis of information provided by MLA Ravikumar of the Dalit Panthers. On the basis of the Ministers' report, steps would be taken through the State Government and the Centre, the Chief Minister said. — Special Correspondent

Another reshuffle of IAS officers

Reward for CRPF jawan

NEW DELHI: Director-General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Jyoti Kumar Sinha has announced a reward of Rs. 10,000 to head constable Suresh Kumar for saving the life of Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin at Madurai railway station on Tuesday morning. Mr. Kumar spotted a middle-aged man approaching Mr. Stalin with a knife in hand as he was being welcomed at the railway station. He prevented the assailant from carrying out the attack and, in the process, sustained injury on his right hand. The suspect managed to escape. — Special Correspondent

Assumes charge

CHENNAI: G. Muthuramakrishnan, IRS, has assumed charge as Director-General of Income Tax (Investigation), Chennai, covering Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Mr. Muthuramakrishnan was earlier Commissioner of Income Tax in Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai, besides working as Joint Secretary in the Central Board of Direct Taxes, New Delhi, in the Tax Policy and Legislation Division, according to an official release. Candidates' list on VIT website

VELLORE: The list of candidates selected for admission to the five-year M.S. (Software Engineering) course of the Vellore Institute Technology has been put on the website: www.vit.ac.in. The selected candidates would be intimated about their selection by telegram. They should pay the fees on or before June 21. The first year classes would begin on July 7, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Vaikasi festival

PUDUKOTTAI: The followers of the Meivazhi Cult celebrated the Vaigasi festival - puthaadai punaicheer thiruvizha - at Meivazhi Salai in the district for two days on Sunday and Monday. The followers assembled at the Meivazhi Salai Ponnaranga Temple and offered common prayers for the true liberation of their souls.

New Principal

PUDUKOTTAI: K. Ravuthar Naina Mohamed has assumed charge as the Principal of the Naina Mohamed College, Rajendrapuram near Aranthangi.

He had served as the Professor of Physics at H. H. Rajah's College, Pudukottai and Principal of the Karaikudi Alagappa Government Arts College, according to a press release of the correspondent of the Naina Mohamed College, N. Mohamed Farook.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 114.79 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 1,220 cusecs and the outflow 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Abduction: Eight held

Tuticorin: The police on Tuesday arrested eight persons on the charge of kidnapping one Bhagyaraj of Eral the previous night.

Bhagyaraj was kidnapped by Ramachandran (45), Station Master of Tuticorin harbour railway station, Rangaraj (43), an engineer at Ottapiaram panchayat union office, Kadalkarai Andi (45) and Velsamy (45), both crane operators at Tuticorin Harbour, and four others, owing to previous enmity.

`Peetam' damaged

TIRUNELVELI: Residents of Omanallur under Munneerpallam police station limits staged a road roko on Monday after the `peetam' of Uyikaattu Sudalai Temple was damaged by unidentified persons on Sunday night. The culprits had damaged the `peetam' with bricks and stones offered by the devotees and cut down the tree near the temple. The villagers gave up the protest after the police assured them that the culprits will be arrested soon.

TASMAC outlet burgled

TIRUNELVELI: The Panagudi police are looking for burglars who stole Rs. 1.38 lakh from an IMFL retail outlet, run by the TASMAC, at Vadakkankulam. The crime came to light when the supervisor of the shop, Murugan, and the salesmen reported for duty on Monday.

Man commits suicide

NAGERCOIL: A lorry driver committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. A wordy quarrel erupted between Sree Raman (35) and his wife Thilagam of Thittuvilai near Boothapandi owing to a family dispute, following which Sree Raman took the extreme step.

ERODE: The ration cardholders could collect 12 to 20 kilograms of PDS rice at Rs. 2 a kg from respective ration shops in all the working days, said Collector D. Karthikeyan on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Killed in accident

SALEM: A construction worker was killed in a road accident near Pannaipatti here on Monday night. The police said Ezhumalai (42) of Theevattipatti was riding his motorcycle when a Government bus hit the vehicle. He sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital, where he died. The Theevattipatti Police have registered a case.

Body found

SALEM: A body of a man was found with his head crushed near the Salem Government College of Engineering here on Tuesday. The police said the deceased was identified as Parthiban, an ex-serviceman residing in Karuppur Housing Board colony.

The police suspect that Parthiban might have been murdered. The Omalur Police have registered a case and are investigating.
