KADAPA: Men and women crossing 45 years of age are prone to osteoporosis due to calcium deficiency making their bones brittle, Orthopaedician S. Subrahmanya Rao said on Tuesday. He had examined patients at a free osteoporosis detection camp, sponsored by Nimulid company, at Sai Nursing Home here and distributed medicines free of charge. Osteoporosis symptoms may not be visible, but it could be detected due to breakage of bones which turn brittle, he stated. Calcium deficiency, lack of physical exercise, smoking, consumption of liquor and hot beverages could cause osteoporosis, Dr. Rao said. Osteoporosis patients should periodically get their eyes and hearing tested. He suggested use of flat slippers and not high-heeled and slippery footwear. Nimulid company representative Srinivas said another free osteoporosis detection camp is being held at Seshu Clinic of Dr. K. Gopinath at Sankarapuram on June 14. Men and women crossing 45 years of age can register their names at the camp being sponsored by Panacea Biotech Ltd., New Delhi and tests worth Rs. 1,200 would be conducted free of charge, he said. The tests available only in corporate hospitals would be performed free of charge at the camp, he added.
