Garuda award for Vizag troupe's mythological play

TIRUPATI: Visakhapatnam-based cultural troupe's `Srikantha Krishna Tandavam' received the Garuda award after it was adjudged the best mythological play at the 51st National Theatre Festival.

The fete, conducted by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam and Sri Venkateswara Natyakala Parishat, concluded on a colourful note at Mahati auditorium on Monday evening.

Troupe members of Natya Bharati (Visakhapatnam) who staged the drama, received the shield from the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam's Executive Officer APVN Sarma, Tirupati Urban Development Authority chairman B.Karunakar Reddy and MLA M.Venkataramana.

Ushodaya Natyamandali of Arumbaka (Guntur district) received the second prize for `Sita Kalyanam'.

`Manavathvaniki Marokonam' by Bhagyasri Fine Arts (Visakhapatnam) was declared the best social play, while `Ani Thelusthondi' by Gurazada Kalamandir (Vijayawada) came in for a second. `Jai Bharat' by Hyderabad-based Sri Malladi Suryanarayana Memorial Arts was declared the best historical play.

M.Rambabu received the special jury award for his effective portrayal of the character of a Chenchu tribal in `Abhayaranyam', while K.Vanaja was selected up for her `Pankajam' character in `Naari Bheri'. Durga Sarma, wife of the Executive Officer of TTD and Anita S.Akella, TTD's financial advisor and chief accounts officer (CAO), gave away the prizes for individual performances.
