Protesters lay siege to RDO office; launch `struggle for land'

TIRUPATI: Poor and homeless persons on Monday took out a huge rally under the aegis of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and laid siege to the Revenue Divisional Officer's office here seeking distribution of house-sites in the Vedanthapuram area, on the outskirts of Tirupati.

The demonstrators strongly criticised the district revenue department for remaining a mute spectator when vast extent of Government lands were being usurped by land sharks with the connivance of vested interests.

The demonstrators did not disperse until the revenue authorities promised to take up their issue immediately after the elections.

Meanwhile, womenfolk also held a similar demonstration under the banner of the AIDWA protesting against the identification of barely 300 beneficiaries for the grant of house-sites as against 3,000 officially declared as eligible in the Rajivnagar panchayat area.
