HYDERABAD: Very few nominations were filed on the opening day for Panchayat Raj elections as Tuesday is considered inauspicious by some people. More than 16,000 MPTCs and 1,097 ZPTCs are slated to go to the polls on June 28 and July 2. Only 22 nominations for ZPTCs and 178 for MPTCs were filed in 15 districts as per reports received by the State Election Commission till 8.30 p.m. Meanwhile, the SEC has asked collectors and district magistrates to send daily reports on the law and order situation as per the proforma devised by it. Only election-related incidents should be included in the report.
Code of conduct
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, SEC Secretary G. N. Rao said that reports from collectors have been sought on Telugu Desam's complaints relating to violation of model code of conduct by the Ministers. Action would be taken against the "violators" on the basis of the reports. Following a newspaper report that a Minister had used a guest house, the collector concerned had been asked to send a report. Asked about the announcement made by Health Minister K.Rosaiah that 12,000 ANMs would be recruited, he said that a report would be sought.
Deletion of names
Mr. Rao said that in order to maintain purity in the elections, the SEC had issued orders for deletion of names from electoral rolls of persons against whom Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) have remained unexecuted for more than six months by the date of publication of electoral rolls. It asked the collector concerned to delete the names within two days of giving three days notice to the person whose name is proposed to be removed to represent his/ her case. He said the expenditure observers have already moved to the allotted districts and the general observers would be reaching their positions on June 18.
