Madikeri jail inmates pour out their woes

Staff Correspondent

ADDRESSING THEIR PROBLEMS: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav addressing jail inmates in Madikeri on Tuesday

Madikeri: The inmates of Madikeri jail here on Tuesday came up with several complaints against the police, accusing them of roughing them up before implicating them in cases, including murders, at the grievance-hearing meeting by Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav. The prisoners told Mr. Yadav that corruption was rampant among the police.

Mr. Yadav said he would gather information from the court and the police and take steps to refer two specific cases to the Corps of Detectives.

One of them pertained to a murder at Garwale village. Two brothers and a woman, now undertrials here, complained that the police had implicated them in the case. The brothers said they, along with the woman, were in the hospital on the day of murder, attending to their mother who was to undergo a surgery.

The woman said she had been raped. Although the police arrested the culprits, they were let off.

In another case from Gonicoppa, Sridhar, another inmate complained that the police had filed charges against his friend and another worker Ramesh, after being unable to identify the killers.

Mr. Yadav said of the 170 inmates, 166 were undertrials. Many of them were lodged in jail for their alleged involvement in minor clashes and petty theft cases.

He asked jailor C.E. Thimmaiah to bring such cases to his notice so that poor of them could get free legal aid through the Legal Aid Services Authority.

District Surgeon V.D. Palekar and Deputy Superintendent of Police

Halesh Nayak were present.
