ANANTAPUR: The fate of 100 seats in the Government Medical College here is likely to be decided on June 15 at the executive meeting of the Medical Council of India scheduled to be held in New Delhi.

A team of the apex body of medical education in the country inspected the medical college and the general hospital attached to it here on Tuesday.

It was the second visit of MCI to the college in a span just six days as another team of MCI inspected the college and hospital on June 8. One more team of MCI inspected the college earlier on April 28.

    Deficiencies

The team that had come for inspection on June 8 was learnt to have pointed out deficiencies in medical care, casualty/emergency and gynaecology departments, operation theatres and shortage of nursing staff. Against the requirement of 360 nursing staff for the hospital, only 70 nurses are available now.

As the medical college and hospital authorities were not responding appropriately to plug the shortfalls pointed out by the MCI teams earlier, Director of Medical Education Sai Gopal and Additional DME A.V. Rao were here to make arrangements for the unexpected visit of the MCI team on Tuesday.

All the three members of the team were said to be from New Delhi. When contacted, the college and hospital authorities stated that the MCI team's visit was so unexpected that even their names were not informed to them.

The team spent only a couple of hours in the college and hospital before leaving for Bangalore.
