KHAMMAM: The Congress party reached an electoral understanding with the CPI in the district to fight the local body polls. Party leader Md. Jani and the party MLAs from the district agreed to give ten ZPTCs and an equal number of MPTCs to the CPI during discussions with the CPI leader Puvvada Nageswara Rao here on Tuesday. Leaders of both parties said at a press conference that they would fight the Telugu Desam-CPI (M) combine in the district. They made it clear that Zilla Parishad chairmanship was the bone of contention between the Congress and the CPI (M). As the Congress was not ready to give up the post presently held by it, it could not strike an understanding with the CPI (M), one of its erstwhile ally. They also announced that the Congress and the CPI would organise a three-day joint campaign in the district from June 18. Khammam district Congress president Vanama Vekateswar Rao, Sambhani Chandra Sekhar, Ram Reddy Venkata Reddy, all MLAs and Chanda Lingaiah, Zilla Parishad Chairman were among those who took part in the talks. In the meantime, the TDP district chief Thummala Nageswara Rao told The Hindu that talks with the CPI (M) were on and a clear picture would emerge only on Wednesday. He said that the CPI (M) was asking for 23 of the 46 ZPTCs along with the Zilla Parishad chairmanship. "We are ready to concede them," he said.
