Naidu talks tough on petro price hike

Staff Reporter

The Telugu Desam Party president has reiterated that the party agitation against the recent hike in prices of petrol and diesel will continue until it is rolled back in full

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu has reiterated that the party agitation against the recent hike in prices of petrol and diesel will continue until it is rolled back in full.

Mr. Naidu told a press conference here on Tuesday that in the 25 months of UPA rule petrol price had gone up from Rs. 40.08 on June 15, 2004, to Rs. 53.66 as of June 5, 2006, and that of diesel from Rs. 25.48 to Rs. 36.20. Referring to the "remedial action" by the State Government, he said the reduction of petrol price by 40 paise of diesel by 20 paise was "eyewash."

He charged that since the UPA took over, every action in increasing prices of essential commodities was `anti-poor' and `belying' its promise of taking the interests of weaker sections seriously. A policy of pro-poor, pro-farmer, pro-artisan and pro-worker was required, he pointed out.

Calling allies

Expressing distress over the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer, Mr. Naidu called upon like-minded parties to come together and chalk out concrete policies that would pave the way for equitable distribution of wealth.

Long term policies

Working together just during elections was for short-term political gain, he said, adding that political cooperation on long-term policies aimed at sustainable development of all sections of people was required.

Panchayat polls

Mr. Naidu refused to elaborate on the party's electoral understanding for the panchayat elections.

He only said that the high command had sent out a list of dos and don'ts, while leaving the selection of candidates and responsibility of ensuring their victory to district and constituency-level committees.
