PROVING TALENT: A. Srinu
VISAKHAPATNAM: We have heard of children doing jobs like a housemaid or a farm hand or helping their parents in the wayside tea stalls or repair shops besides studying hard, most of the time under a street lamp. Some of them score well in the academics. Now a street child joins the list. A boy, picked up by the local YMCA from the railway station here, has scored very well in the SSC examination. He was admitted to a corporate college by the organisation for pursuing higher studies.
Project aim
Seven years ago YMCA picked up A. Srinu from the railway station under its Street Children Project. He could only tell his name and the organisation did not know where he came from. Srinu could be from Srikakulam area, says P. Prakash Benhur of YMCA. The Street Children Project aims at providing shelter, food and education for them to prevent them from turning into vagabonds and creating problems to society. Srinu has proved the concept right as he took to studies seriously after being admitted to Andhra University High School. He was school first in the VII class common examination. Srinu worked hard and scored 501 aggregate marks in the SSC examination held in March this year. Keen on helping Srinu pursue further studies, the YMCA has paid the fee for Intermediate on its own and admitted him to a local residential college. ``Srinu has been admitted to hostel of the college. This will help him study with concentration and also mingle with other students. We will be happy if some sponsors come forward to meet the expenses," says Mr. Prakash Benhur.
