Inter-state dacoit gang busted

ANANTAPUR: A six-member inter-state dacoit gang was busted by the Guntakal railway police on Tuesday and Rs. 80,000 in cash was seized from their possession.

According to the railway police, they took six persons, moving around suspiciously in Guntakal railway station, into custody. During interrogation it was found that they were members of a dacoit gang. They belong to Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. - Staff Reporter

Three electrocuted

KADAPA: Three persons, including a boy, were electrocuted and 10 others injured in `Nagarapamma jathara' when a `chandni bandi' mounted on a tractor came in contact with electric wires at Budireddipalle in Pedninenikalva panchayat of Tsundupalle mandal in the early hours of Tuesday.

The dead were identified as Sankaraiah, 50, Sivaiah, 30, and Bhaskar, 5. Those who sustained burns were admitted to hospitals at Kadapa, Kurnool and Tirupati, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

Woman hacked to death

KADAPA: A 42-year-old woman, M. Sireesha alias Amaravathi, was hacked to death at her house in Boyapalle village in Khajipet mandal on Tuesday. The Khajipet police registered a case and suspected the role of her husband Pulla Reddy. He is at large. - Staff Reporter

Award for HZL

VISAKHAPATNAM: Hindustan Zinc Limited's Vizag Smelter was conferred the prestigious Golden Peacock award for environment management for 2006 by a jury headed by P.N. Bhagawathi, former Chief Justice of India.

K. Siva Prasad, Unit Head, Hindustan Zinc Limited, received the award from V.S. Kokje, Governor, Himachal Pradesh. The award was presented during the valedictory session of the eighth World Congress on Environment Management held at Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, recently. - Staff Reporter

Ban on film challenged

HYDERABAD: The writ petitions filed in the High Court challenging the action of the State Government in banning the English feature film `The Da Vinci Code' has been adjourned to Thursday. Justice G. Raghu Ram heard the arguments on behalf of the petitioners at length on Tuesday.

Two separate writ petitions were filed one by Sony India distributors and the second one by Lakshmi Ganapathi films. The petitioners said that once the Censor Board had cleared the film the State Government cannot interfere with the screening of film. - Legal Correspondent

Advocate-General's suggestion sought

HYDERABAD: A division Bench of the High Court on Tuesday called upon the Advocate-General to suggest steps to put an end to practice of police to chain the detenues even when they are in hospital.

The Bench was treating a report in a newspaper and a television wherein it was reported that a women activist Kolli Rani of Visakhapatnam was chained to the hospital bed. The Bench expressed anguish at the counter affidavit filed by officers. - Legal Correspondent

Arms dump unearthed

KURNOOL: The police teams of Kurnool and Prakasam carried out a joint inspection and unearthed an arms dump near Rudrakodu in the interior Nallamala forest in Kurnool district on Tuesday. The teams recovered three claymore mines, 50 kg gelatine sticks, one hand grenade and 100 detonators. - Staff Reporter

Protest against temple demolition

ANANTAPUR: The municipal authorities of Guntakal demolished a temple in Hanumesh Nagar area in the railway divisional headquarters town in the district on Tuesday stating that it was constructed on the land belonging to the civic body. Residents of the locality staged a protest against the demolition and demanded its reconstruction in the same place. - Staff Reporter

Housewife dies under suspicious conditions

KURNOOL: A housewife identified as Pushpavathi (27) died under mysterious circumstances at her residence in Kothapet in the city on Tuesday.

Her parents lodged a complaint with the police that the husband Maddileti was responsible for the death.

PMRY interviews postponed

Kakinada: The interviews for selection of beneficiaries under PMRY scheme scheduled to be held from June 13 till June 17 have been postponed in view of the election code of conduct coming into effect for ZPTC and MPTC elections, according to the General Manager, District Industries Centre. Auto drivers' union office bearers

Kakinada: Chinthapalli Satyanarayana and Ganja Bhaskararao have been elected as president and general secretary respectively of the Auto owners and drivers welfare association at its elections held here on Tuesday.

Association honorary president Pithani Nookarajus acted as the returning officer.

One killed in Lorries collision

Kakinada: Anem Koteswera Rao (28) sitting atop a sand laden lorry got killed when another lorry rammed the vehicle from behind near the Jonnada bridge on the national highway on Tuesday. The Alamuru police registered the case. - Correspondent

Three killed in road accident

KHAMMAM: Three persons were killed in a road accident near Julurpadu village in Khammam - Kothagudem road on Monday. The accident occurred as a jeep occupied by a marriage party overturned. The vehicle driver, Amar, 30, Mittakanti Jyothi, 28, and Shyamala Prasad, 16, died on the spot. Five others were injured. Police investigation is on. - Staff Reporter
