ALAPPUZHA: The ongoing project for the beautification of canals of Alappuzha would be completed by the end of July and the beautified canals would be opened for tourists in the first week of August. The decision was taken at a meeting of Canal Management Society held here on Monday evening. Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who presided over the meeting, said that the beautified canals would be opened for tourists before this year's Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which is to be held in the second week of August. He said that the construction of a lock for the regulated entry of seawater into canals would be completed before July 15. District Collector K.R. Muraleedharan, who spoke at the meeting, said the 51 shops constructed on the banks of the canals would be handed over to the Canal Management Society for renting out. The meeting formed a sub-committee, which includes Alappuzha MP K. S. Manoj; MLA K. C. Venugopal; municipal chairman P.P. Chitharanjan and Mr. Muraleedharan for deciding the terms and conditions for renting out the shops.
