THRISSUR: The 12-hour general strike called by the pro-ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the State on Tuesday was total and peaceful in the district.

Vehicular traffic was thin with private line buses, taxis and autorickshaws remaining off the road. The KSRTC also did not operate any convoy services. However, two-wheelers and private cars were seen freely plying.

Most of the offices and business establishments remained closed while the remaining functioned with skeleton staff.

There were no reports of the strike supporters forcing closure of any establishments or creating roadblocks anywhere.

The hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday last had given offices three holidays in succession as it preceded a second Saturday and Sunday. The public had to face hardships because of the absence of staff in offices for so many days.

Offices remain closed

Our Staff Reporter writes from Kottayam: The strike called by the Left parties against the increase in prices of petrol and diesel was total and peaceful in the district.

Shops remained closed and bus services were not operated. However, private vehicles, both cars and two-wheelers, could be seen.

Most of the Government offices in the district remained closed. According to the police, there had been no reports of violence from anywhere. LDF activists took out marches at many places in the district.

The march in Kottayam town was led by V.N. Vasavan, MLA, and Centre of Indian Trade Unions district president V.R. Bhaskaran.
