51 held in Polkampalli arson, massacre case

  • 13 women among those under arrest
  • 10 persons are the main accused
  • Police say incident was not pre-meditated, but a result of a fit of rage

    MAHABUBNAGAR: As many as 51 persons were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the Polkampalli massacre in which 13 persons of a family were burnt alive by a rival group.

    Announcing this Superintendent of Police K. Srninivas Reddy said 80 to 85 persons were involved in the case and the remaining persons would be arrested soon.

    Ananthaiah late Kistappa's brother, Srihari, son of Kistappa, Sandappa, Madhusudan, Katta Sayappa, Sayamma sarpanch of the village, Kosualya, wife of Kistappa were among the arrested he said.

    SP said that over 10 persons were the main accused and there were 13 women among those arrested. He said the incident was not pre-planned but was the result of a fit of rage.

    Ashok seeks support

    Narrating the incident the SP said that Ashok eldest son of Hanumaiah went around the village with his friends to village to ask the people to excuse him for killing Kistappa in 2004 and requested the villagers to support him in the coming local body elections.

    One Gopal questioned Ashok on the propriety of his asking for support. Ashok and his friend Ashappa allegedly beat up Gopal who went to the house of the late Kistappa and informed Ananthaiah and Srihari about the highhanded behaviour of Ashok and his friends. Ananthaiah and Srihari reportedly gathered some villagers and attacked Ashok and his friends, which forced them to flee the village.

    Burnt alive

    Then the angry mob allegedly went to Hanumaiah's house and torched two houses after burning alive Baswaraj, youngest son of Hanumaiah and Srinu son of Chandrappa and setting ablaze vehicles parked in front of the house.

    Narayanpet DSP V. Ramulu, Kodanagal CI Mallaiah and Mahabubnagar CI Muthaiah were also present. The SP congratulated the police party who nabbed the accused.
