HYDERABAD: Traffic at several places in the State capital crawled at snail's pace as groups of acvists of opposition parties and affiliated organisations protested at high traffic zones over the recent hike in petroleum prices and demanded rollback.

As TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu came on a cycle from his residence in Jubilee Hills to the party headquarters, it threw traffic on the busy road to Madhapur out of gear. Likewise, the rasta roko by the CPI(M) and TDP at RTC crossroads led to movement of vehicles to a grinding halt. Angry motorists honked their horns for at least an hour.

Leaders and activists of the CPI led by State secretary K. Narayana and Aziz Pasha, MP, squatted at Liberty `T' junction, disrupting traffic for an hour. The police arrested most of them. They were released personal surety in the afternoon.

Mr. Narayana described the fuel price increase as the UPA's `unilateral decision' and said it would mean a burden of about Rs. 9,200 crores on the common man.

Members of Marxist-Leninist parties - New Democracy, MCPI, SUCI and CPI (ML), staged a "rasta roko" at Basheerbagh crossroads demanding withdrawal of the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

They took out a rally from Old MLA Quarters, holding banners and raising slogans denouncing the hike, Government policies and against UPA rule.

In a statement, leaders of the parties, D.V. Krishna, M.Venkat Reddy, K. Sridhar and Ramanna Goud said a large number of activists were arrested, taken to the Saifabad police station and released later.
