VISAKHAPATNAM: A proposal has been made to exclude 1,800 acres of Gangavaram Port area from Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) sparking off a row. CPI(M) city committee secretary K. Loknadham strongly opposed the GO Ms. 272/23.05.2006 and stated that the corporation would lose crores of rupees in the form of taxes due to the decision. "By excluding an area of 1,800 acres from GVMC and declaring it as a notified area, Gangavaram Port need not pay any tax to GVMC while enjoying the infrastructure provided by it. The GVMC will lose, as per an unofficial report, Rs.18 crores a year," he stated. If Gangavaram Port was excluded from corporation area, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and other public and private sector units would also stake claim for such a facility, thereby causing a huge revenue loss to the corporation. Mr. Loknadham, in a letter to district Collector A.K. Singhal said on Tuesday that of the 1,800 acres, 1,400 acres was earmarked for the port after acquiring the land from VSP and the remaining 400 acres was bought from villagers in Pedagantyada.
