Urdu journalist passes away

Staff Reporter

Hyderabad: Veteran Urdu journalist and CPI leader Jahandar Afsar, 82, passed away here on Tuesday. He is survived by two sons and three daughters.

Afsar worked with several newspapers such as Taj weekly, Nizam Daily, Musheere Deccan, Payam, Iqhdam, Khursheed. However, his association with The Siasat was the longest.

Poet, freedom fighter and rebel, Afsar rubbed shoulders with the Nizam but always sided with the underdog.

Though he fought against the Nizam's autocratic rule, the status of freedom fighter eluded him as he never went to jail.

A scion of the royal family, his father Mir Ifthekhar Ali Khan was a descendent of Prince Humayun Jah, the fourth son of Nizam I.

However, Afsar took pride in identifying himself with the underprivileged. In fact, Afsar developed hatred towards autocracy and showed black flags to the seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan at King Kothi.

This confrontationist attitude cost him dearly. His monthly allowance of Rs. 250 was immediately stopped.

Afsar was influenced by progressive writers like Mir Hasan, Sahebzada Maikash, Makhdoom Mohinuddin and Raj Bahadur Gour.

In 1950 he became a member of CPI and was elected counsellor of the United Citizens Committee from Moghalpura in 1956 and 1964.

K. Amarnath, president, and G. Anjaneyulu, general secretary, Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists expressed profound grief over his death and conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.

In a separate message, K. Srinivas Reddy, secretary general, Indian Journalists' Union, also conveyed his condolences.

In a statement, M.S. Hashmi, president, and K. Manjari, secretary, Hyderabad Union of Journalists, expressed sorrow at the demise of Afsar.
