BANGALORE: Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Commissioner K. Jairaj on Monday said that the maintenance of flyovers, grade separators, railway underbridges and railway over bridges could be outsourced.

Replying to former Mayor P.R. Ramesh at the BMP council meeting, Mr. Jairaj said if the council agreed, tenders for outsourcing would be called soon.

Mr. Ramesh said that Sirsi Circle flyover, which was hardly 10 years old, was already "ageing." "Water stagnates on the surface and motorists find it difficult to use it during rains. After spending Rs. 94 crore on the project, we have failed to maintain it," he said.

The Commissioner, who agreed there water was stagnating on the surface, said it was because the vents had been blocked. "We will ensure that the flyover is maintained properly. I will also get a load test done to evaluate the quality of this flyover," he said.

Over 45 resolutions were approved during Monday's meeting. These included renaming of roads and approving the escalated costs of some projects such as Rajajingar underpass and the flyover at National College. Though some resolutions on extension of lease period and renewal of lease of BMP property were approved, the subject on allotment of more space to the owners of Garuda Mall was deferred.

The tender floated by the BMP for a 15-year maintenance of the Subash Chandra Bose Commercial Complex (Public Utility Building) on Mahatma Gandhi Road and the construction of a multiplex there without disturbing the structure was cancelled following protests by members.
