Thiruvananthapuram: The dawn-to-dusk general strike called by trade unions owing allegiance to the ruling LDF in protest against the hike in the prices of petroleum products in the State paralysed normal life in the city on Tuesday. The strike was total and peaceful in the city. No untoward incident was reported. Shops and business establishments remaining closed and vehicles kept off the roads. The KSRTC did not operate its city services during the strike period. The Private Bus Operators' Federation and transport unions joined the strike. Attendance in Government offices was thin, while most educational institutions remained closed. The University of Kerala had postponed the examinations scheduled for the day.
The district committee of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi took out a march to the Accountant-General's office with a coffin in protest against the hike in fuel prices. The Trade Union Sponsoring Committee took out a march to the General Post Office at Pulimoodu.
