dated June 15, 1956: Truman refutes claim

The former US President, Mr. Harry Truman, said in Paris on June 13 that a Moscow Radio claim that Russia tried to stop the atomic bomb attacks on Japan in 1945 was "pure propaganda and a lie." Mr. Truman, who ordered the US Air Force to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, told Reuter, "These are the facts and I know them better than anyone else. The first atomic explosion in the world was in New Mexico on July 16, 1945. As soon as I got the message that it was a success I told Churchill and Stalin that the explosion had been a success and that it was an immensely powerful explosion." Mr. Truman said Churchill and Stalin "recommended formally" that the US should drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Mr. Churchill knew all about it because the British had started investigation and turned their information over to us. Stalin just knew it was a very heavy explosion. I told him we were going to drop it on Japanese towns devoted entirely to war work.''
