SWEET MEMORIES: A unique birthday cake. Photo: P. Goutham
SALEM: Writing names and greetings on cakes has now become old-fashioned. Now, with the help of technology, one can have the photograph of the person celebrating his/her birthday or a beautiful scenery or the front cover of a greeting card printed on the cake. Bakers in Salem are now using this technology to attract more customers. Using edible ink, which the bakers say is imported, an image can be printed on a rice wafer sheet, a paper-like material made of rice. Then, the sheet is embedded on the cake, which is called by the bakers as `digital image cake'. "A number of people are selecting greeting cards and coming to us to have the front image of the card printed on the cake. The response is good," bakers say. One has to spend more to buy a digital image cake. It costs Rs. 180-a-kg.
