SAP woos SMEs with Business One suite

Anand Parthasarathy

Picks up 1,000th corporate customer

  • Mumbai-based plastics company is 10,000th user
  • New centre of excellence to focus on e-governance, retail and telecom sectors

MUMBAI: Enterprise solutions leader SAP has acquired its thousandth corporate customer this month. On Wednesday, it further consolidated its position among small players by hailing Mumbai-based Rajiv Plastics Industries as the 10,000th user of its three-year old `Business One' suite of integrated solutions for small and medium businesses.

Speaking at the opening session of the annual three-day SAP Summit here, Alan Sedghi, President and CEO, SAP South Asia, said over half of its Indian customers were small or medium sized businesses, and increasingly in the burgeoning retail sector. The company's Bangalore-based development centre had helped to localise the `Business One' suite and flagship products like Net Weaver for Indian conditions and regulatory frameworks.

SAP will shortly set up a centre of excellence in Gurgaon near Delhi to address e-governance applications, while another centre in Mumbai would serve the retail sector. The company already partners Siemens in a Bangalore-based centre that addresses airport management.

Donna Troy, Executive Vice President in charge of SAP's Indirect Channels for the SME arena, said the spectacular growth in the company's business in this sector had led the company to aim for a customer base of one lakh worldwide by 2010.

The technology summit, which concludes on Friday, has brought together nearly 4,000 engineers and partners of the Germany-based enterprise applications player.
