BJP leader seeks reduction in tax on petroleum products

Staff Correspondent

Privatise public sector units in the oil sector, says Arvind Limbavali

Bidar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that the State Government bring down the price of petroleum products by reducing tax on them.

Arvind Limbavali, general secretary of BJP's State unit and MLC, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the Government was levying around 20 per cent tax on petroleum products. If this was reduced, the burden on the common man would come down considerably, he said.

"I demand that the State Government reduce the tax even if the Union Government does not do so," he said.

Mr. Limbavali demanded that public sector units in the oil sector be privatised. "I suspect that mismanagement is the reason for losses in the public sector," he said.

He criticised the Union Government for scrapping the hydrocarbon pricing policy and increasing prices indiscriminately. The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government had increased the price of petroleum seven times in two years. The National Democratic Alliance Government had increased it just five times in six years, he said. Mr. Limbavali criticised the Left's protest against the fuel price increase. "They agree to the price increase in the UPA coordination committee meeting and protest against it later," he said. He denied allegations made by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge that Ministers D.H. Shankara murthy and Ramachandra Gowda were threatening employees with transfers they failed to vote for them.
