Senior IAS officer applies for VRS

Special Correspondent

Hyderabad: Senior IAS Officer V. M. Manohar Prasad has applied for voluntary retirement from service (VRS). The Government is likely to issue orders accepting his plea.

Belonging to the 1989 batch of IAS officers, Mr. Prasad prefers to work for something, which is dear to his heart - rural development.

Mr. Prasad is presently Secretary Rain Shadow Areas Development, a department created by Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy as soon as he took over as Chief Minister.

Mr. Prasad's commitment to the cause of the poor is widely known.

His last big assignment was when he served as Collector of Nalgonda district.

He was one among the officers held hostage by naxalites years ago in the famous Gurthedu kidnap incident along with S. R. Shankeran.

It is learnt that J. C. Mohanty, Secretary Remote Area Development, is also contemplating to quit the Government service for the same purpose, rural development.

N. Jaya Prakash Narayana was the first IAS officer in the recent past to quit the Government service. He later set up Lok Satta, a citizen group fighting on public causes.
