Staff Reporter

`Shift Coimbatore Rural SP office to Tirupur'

TIRUPUR: The demand for upgrading the Tirupur Municipality as Corporation and shifting Coimbatore Rural Superintendent of Police office to Tirupur has been taken up once again with the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday.

When the delegation of trade bodies from the knitwear town of Tirupur met the CM at Chennai to seek his help in the contentious issue of pollution, the Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) presented a memorandum urging him to look in to the demands.

Highlighting the exploding growth of this town in a span of two decades, the TEA president, A. Sakthivel, said that current trend in capacity expansion and investments would continue and that would resulting in inadequate infrastructure problems. He said the town population has reached eight lakh and it would shortly touch a million. He urged that this was the right time for the State Government to make Tirupur Municipality a Corporation by adding adjoining areas to this town for better revenue growth and improvement in the facilities. Mr. Sakthivel stressed that the upgrading should take place before the ensuing local body elections.

"Moreover, as more number of business people from abroad is visiting the town, it needs to be showcased as a better city like our knitwear products,'' he said.
